Biography

Noelle Martin is a lawyer and researcher completing her PhD at the University of Western Australia. She was awarded Young Western Australian of the Year and made the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list for her efforts to fight image-based sexual abuse. She fights this issue around the world, often appearing in news media and documentaries on this topic.

Abstract

Deepfake abuse (or non-consensual synthetic intimate imagery) has become a global problem. Countries around the world are moving to regulate the corporate actors who facilitate this abuse and the perpetrators who create and distribute this material. In this keynote speech, Noelle Martin will outline the scale and gendered nature of this problem, and the problems and challenges with regulating this abuse, drawing insights from Australia’s attempts to tackle this evolving crisis.
